Which Wheel and Tire To Use With My Wide Glide Front End

May 30th, 2009 | Posted by Justin Kaiser | Category: Tires and Wheels | Comments

Just received the following from one of the Big Bob VW Trike Readers…

“fwiw, H-D thru 1999 used 3/4″ axle, 2000- uses 1″. worth checking.the tire choice somewhat limited by the 21″ size, just be sure to use a quality brand like Dunlop, Avon etc. NO cheapchit chink tire if you value your health, not the place to skimp.”

Thank you greatly for the input.

Also, I’ve found a great many friends online at the Motorcycle Riders Club of America…

Wheel Found – Need Tire Suggestions

May 12th, 2009 | Posted by Justin Kaiser | Category: Tires and Wheels | Comments

wheelI found a brand new 60 spoke Harley 21″x2.15″ wheel on E-Bay brand new for $75… $95 shipped.

The description was as follows… Front Wheel, 60 Spoke, 21″ x 2.15″, steel hub, chrome steel rim, Single disc, assemblies come complete with bearings, seals. It is BRAND NEW, bought it about a year ago for a electric chopper project that never happened. I am just moving stuff out from under as cash is good, better than spare parts laying around. As to what it fits I am not a bike guy so I have no clue.”

Based on my conversations with my mentor Type 1 Bud, this should fit like a charm and I don’t really need a dual disc brake setup in the front. The lowest price I’ve found anything like this in the aftermarket arena has been $160.

Now I just need to find a great deal on a tire and mounting.

Harley Wide Glide Front End Ordered For The VW Trike

May 11th, 2009 | Posted by Justin Kaiser | Category: Frame Tech, Front End Tech | Comments

After some conversation with my mentor Bud, I’ve decided to make the major purchase decision of a front end for the build…

I’d been watching these on e-bay for quite some time. One of the vendors that kept coming up was Demon’s Cycle. For a total cost of $442 with Free FedEx shipping I’ve picked up a Chrome Billet Smooth Front End 2″ Over for Harley Wide Glide…

I am NOT the Glassmann – Here is HIS contact information

May 9th, 2009 | Posted by Justin Kaiser | Category: Body Tech | Comments

I’ve had several people call me and e-mail me recently asking to purchase one of my trike bodies.   Just to put it out there…  I DON’T MAKE THEM.  I understand that because of this blog and my trike build I have been indexed in the top 5 search results for “Trike Bodies”

If you are looking for a trike body, or need to talk to Eric “The Glassmann”, pleaes visit HIS web-site at http://www.trikesinc.com or call his phone number at (678) 492-9181.

I’ve also had several comments regarding Eric and his bodies…  Good and Bad…  My experience was good.  I paid, he shipped, it arrived.

I’m always willing to talk about the project, build, and how-to’s, but not at 11:30pm and 1am… I share everything I learned here…  http://www.BigBobTrike.com

Trike Build – Harley Neck Options

May 9th, 2009 | Posted by Justin Kaiser | Category: Frame Tech | Comments

harleyneckIt’s been a while since I posted an update on the trike build… I haven’t touched it for over 6 months as some other things came up. I’m still looking for a Fat Boy front end at a reasonable price.

In the meantime, I figure I can get the frame finished.  Rather than use the front end and the neck from the donor bike, I’ve opted to find a good Harley front-end and a custom machined neck.

I found one on E-Bay today from the seller http://motors.shop.ebay.com/merchant/kirk1.309

His description is as follows and will help you in your build…”IF YOU ARE BUILDING A FRAME OR JUST CUSTOMIZING YOUR EXISTING ONE, YOU WILL NEED A NEW STEERING NECK. THIS NECK IS CUSTOM MACHINED FROM 1026 DOM STEEL. THE OD IS 2″ AND IS ID IS MACHINED TO 1.312″ TO ACCEPT THE BEARING CUPS. THE LENGTH IS 5-5/8″& IT ACCEPTS STANDARD 1″ TRIPLE TREE SHAFTS. SHOP AROUND & YOU WON’T FIND ONE CHEAPER! THESE ARE BRAND NEW & MADE IN THE USA. I WILL SHIP NEXT BUSINESS UPON CLEARED PAYMENT. THANKS FOR LOOKING!!”

Total cost was $25 plus $8 for shipping from Monmouth, IL. It was certainly worth my time to purchase rather than make one of my own.  20 minutes after the purchase I received an e-mail that he had already dropped it in the mail.  Now that’s service.

I’m also looking at Fat Boy front-ends from the following…

If you have any input I’d love to hear it.
