Driving Big Bob – Illinois Motorcycle License

July 12th, 2008 | Posted by Justin Kaiser | Category: Motorcycle License | Comments

I found out today that in Illinois you don’t need a motorcycle license to ride a trike.  The classification is J-11, a person can operate a trike, but can’t operate a motorcycle with this classification.

I haven’t ridden a motorcycle since the early 90’s in WI and I miss it greatly.  And since I was never licensed I figured I should get this step taken care of soon.

There is a riding test for this classification, but it mainly involves just riding around the parking lot.  I have asked for a copy of the riding portion, and they will not pass it out.

I think I’m going to end up just getting classified for regular motorcycle operation and possibly take one of the basic riders courses at the local community college.  This way it will be a great refresher on operating all controls, maneuvering, and of course will get full certification to ride 2 wheels as well.
